Muscle Activations Techniques™ (MAT is the acronym) is a program developed and owned by Greg Roskopf which he teaches to trainers and therapists across the country. He is a biomechanics specialist who specializes in identifying and addressing the biomechanical imbalances that contribute to chronic pain or injury.
He has worked with various elite and professional athletes including Peyton Manning and John Lynch, along with working as a consultant for various professional teams like the Denver Broncos. “MAT provides an improved environment for healing. The benefit of MAT is that the changes can be immediate. A professional baseball pitcher increased his throwing velocity by 10 mph immediately following a MAT session. This was due to improved mechanics combined with pain free motion. We see these types of changes every day.” – Greg Roskopf
“Thanks to Chris, I can play soccer. No, he didn’t teach me how to play soccer. But now that he did MAT™ work on me, my back no longer hurts after I play soccer. Which is really important, because I play on a soccer team. He also used MAT™ to help me get over a knee injury from snowboarding. Oh and now that he worked on my feet, I ran track last year without orthotics in my shoes because I no longer need them! I know I can count on Chris to help keep me going, no matter what sport I do.” – Matt 14 of Rumson

Watch Greg in the video below explain how the concept of MAT came out of his own personal experience of not getting better from an injury at the age of 19.

The 5 Fundamentals of MAT
1. Increases the contractile efficiency of muscle which increases muscle strength and stability throughout the muscular system.
2. Increases the amount of stress the muscles can handle which increases the muscles ability to recover from injury and overuse.
3. Identifies muscle weakness as the cause of muscle tightness and muscle pain.
4. Views muscular tightness as our own Natural Protection Mechanism.
5. Increases joint mobility but not at the expense of flexibility. The increased stability or “motor control” allows for improvements in range of motion.
The MAT Program Does The Following
As described by MAT Headquarters, “It is referred to as a “process” as there are hundreds of muscles and joints to be evaluated in order to uncover the muscle issues that could be contributing to the loss of physical performance and any associated subjective complaints, which leads to what could be many sessions of work to solve the problems.” It is a whole body approach to overall muscle dysfunction.
MAT is a method of resetting the connection between a muscle and the brain by manual reactivation or using isometrics, which restores mobility and increases muscle contraction while eliminating chronic muscle problems.
MAT has a cumulative affect; therefore, coming consistently and making time for your reinforcement exercises are a big part of having success with MAT. Having and doing the proper reinforcement exercises in order to progress my MAT sessions, including using the Core Restore Training System™ is a necessary step in the process of recovery and moving forward toward your individual goals.
MAT is a part of the exercise continuum preparing your body for the stresses of exercise and daily activities. You are an active participate the entire time during your sessions. Sometimes clients need to be willing to cut back on exercise and activities to allow the body to heal. Once we both determine you are ready to handle the stresses of exercise then we work exercise and activities back in to your life. This is always determined on an individual basis.
We always encourage our clients to look at the big picture and we believe that patience and awareness are key ingredients to ultimate success.
